mounted officers lining the streets in the french quarter. here safety is priority. there's one trick to keeping the peace in new orleans. >> our officers learn from their first days of service that when you're in a huge crowd of people by yourself, you have to make friends and talk to people and work with people and that crowd will support you no matter what. >> reporter: there's no doubt, it's a big under taking for the city but the jobs and the more than $400 million it's expected to rake in the next week is worth it. >> the this is the nopd -- this is the nopd's time. we're going to eclipse everything that happened to us in the next two weeks and the men and women of this department are not going to let the people down. >> reporter: so far they haven't disappointed. the first couple nights we were here in new orleans we were walking around bourbon street which is controlled chaos on bourbon street with everybody out there celebrating, drinking, throwing beads, and

everyone was high fiving police officers. they have a presence but they are friendly. people were taking pictures with the officer we were near, high fiving him, so they try to maintain a good relationship with the people of new orleans and the out-of-towners expected in for the super bowl. >> are you getting a feel now, are the football fans starting to pour in to the streets? >> reporter: we have been on the streets of new orleans and looking around the french quarter and, of course, bourbon street and we haven't seen 49ers fans yet but i'm sure they will be coming in the next couple of days. mardi gras is put away for now and now people are going to start focusing on football. >> are you ready for media day this morning? that's just crazy. >> reporter: am i ready for what? >> media day with all the

people that come from all over the world? they congregate at the superdome. that might be more dennis' domain in sports but it's a crazy day there. >> reporter: you know, that's what we have been seeing a lot more than football fans is all the media come in and they are coming in from everywhere. they need to focus on the game. >> can't forget about that. thank you, michelle. check back in with you a little bit, michelle griego live in new orleans. both teams are now in new orleans to get ready for the super bowl on sunday. the 49ers got there on sunday. the ravens are arrived yesterday afternoon after practice and meeting in baltimore in the morning. the ravens coach john harbaugh talked about his childhood days in michigan playing against his younger brother jim the 49ers coach. >> jim was ahead of his time. he was bigger, stronger than all the kids his age, didn't

hang around with the kids his age too much. he hung around with me and my friends all the time. and he was good enough to take it to us on a pretty regular basis. >> john harbaugh calling his brother a great competitor and lots of stories about those two brothers as the week progresses. bartenders are blasting mayor lee's call for them to serve less booze during the super bowl on sunday. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington reports on the booze fight over the mayor's request. >> reporter: the mayor is concerned about public safety especially after the riots in the mission district following the world series. but bar and restaurant owners are thinking about their bottom line. the mayor wants to prevent the type of riots and destruction that happened after the giants won the world series. rowdy fans destroyed property and set fires in the mission district. they even torched a muni bus. police encourage bars to limit

their alcohol sales on super bowl sunday. they plan to visit some of the businesses damaged if the giants mayhem but some bars feel that limiting alcohol is not the solution and now the american beverage institute called lee's suggestion a ridiculous idea. they released a statement urging the city to avoid demonizing a perfectly legal project. local bar owners say if they stopped serving hard liquor business would be sidelined. >> responsible beverage service and consumption go hand in hand. that's what we as free americans have the right to do whether we're conducting our business or enjoying ourselves. >> reporter: lee does not plan to ban alcohol sales but he wants bars to be responsible and also bar-goers to drink responsibly. live in san francisco, elissa harrington, cbs 5. all right. elissa harrington, thank you. i have to tell you, in new

orleans, the beer and the booze never stops. i think people are still drinking from late last night. now, many people -- many fans, football fans in the bay area, many are stocking up on counterfeit merchandise. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran reports from the newsroom. reporter: it's happening too frequently and more people are falling victim to these scams because every detail down to the confirmation letter appears legitimate. now this morning a hayward couple is out almost $6,000 because of a super bowl ticket scam. they found an ad on craigslist for four tickets. they wired the seller who is in baltimore $5,900. then they got this. take a look. a picture of quarterback colin kaepernick and joe flacco with a message underneath that read, enjoy the game. go, ravens, lol. now, we spoke to the victims. they did not want to go on

camera but tell us they have not gene to the police. scams are no longer limited to ticket sales. but fake online weekend rentals. the scam artists collect up front money using fake addresses or homes that are not really up for rent. when the tourists arrive they discover the paperwork like the entire deal was fake. experts in new orleans say they have seen this tactic before but now it's getting worse. >> i think the demand by the super bowl is bringing out the scam artists. it's growing. every day we don't enforce we encourage more people to do it. >> reporter: french quarter say it's a by-product of the growing short-term rental market in the city. stronger enforcement they say would put a dent in the scam. experts say if the prices are too good to be true, it's most likely a scam. reporting live in the newsroom, cate caugiran, cbs 5. it's weather time. >> you have to be careful out there. >> you do. and michelle, looks nice out

there. you gave us a little weather report off the top, a little misty. >> reporter: it's warmer this morning than yesterday. tomorrow morning will be rain and heavy winds but for right now it's okay. a little eerie out. i'm actually looking at the mississippi river and there's a lot of fog and mist coming off that. hey, guys, i just want to tell you we have been collecting beads the last three days i think that we have been here so i have been asking people what -- yeah, i know, i have been asking people what they do with their beads once they collect them because some of them bring garbage bags with them to the parades and put them in their bags. this is what they do sometimes. they will cut them up a little bit, make animals out of them. i don't know if rick can get this. they will make animals or make jacks and get a ball and play jacks with the necklaces. pretty cool, huh? >> if you look up in the trees

on bourbon street, i think you can see some of the beads from two or three super bowls ago. . michelle, thunderstorms there in new orleans tonight. jealous, wish i could be out there. [ laughter ] >> we have high clouds in the bay area, quiet start to the day, temperatures not too bad. today no threat of rain here, looking good. it's going to stay nice and dry. and by the afternoon, the temperatures warming up in the 50s and the low 60s. i think as we head toward the next few days some of the numbers may be up in the mid- 60s around the bay area. we'll talk about that coming up. right now let's check out the roads with liza battalones. >> good morning. after a rough morning for local

transit yesterday, a smooth start this morning. no delays for our first bart trains. they are out of the yard on time. no problems for the altamont commuters, san francisco muni or caltrain. a look at the beautiful bay bridge toll plaza, this is what we like to see wide open space. metering lights are off, no traffic at the pay gates. a breakdown in the left lane on the 880 nimitz. 880 wide open outside the airport in both directions. and 880 in san jose that's also looking good. we haven't had any major problems for the silicon valley so far this morning. that's a look at the commute. here's frank. chp looking for the drivers who did this. take a look. youtube video posted over the weekend of a sideshow cars doing doughnuts in the middle of the nimitz right near the oakland coliseum during the

afternoon. traffic stopped on 880 in both directions. people got out of their cars and gonged at the stunts. nobody was hurt but the chp says it caused a major disruption. >> it's not funny. a lot of people were affected that day. >> chp says they will aggressively pursue the people responsible for the disruption over the weekend. president barack obama goes to las vegas today to push for immigration reform. the president was planning to introduce a plan of his own but a bipartisan group of eight senators came out with a proposal yesterday and the president is getting behind it. >> there is more political risk in opposing immigration reform than in supporting it. >> no one should expect that members of the senate are just going to rubber stamp what a

group have met and decided. >> the plan would provide a way for about 11 million illegal immigrants to become permanent citizens with beefed up border security. coming up, the psychology of success. why now is a great time to be a bay area sports fan. >> and, of course, we're live in new orleans looking ahead to super bowl xlvii. we're learning what the locals do here in the crescent city including one tradition for the little ones.

route. the name of the game is how many beads you can get so the parents make them some cool contraptions to get as many beads as possible. i have seen these along the parade routes. >> people buy them at hardware stores. they are perfect for the kids. they can stay up here, they're safe, out of harm's way and they can catch lots of beads. >> that's the name of the game. >> i just loving catching some beads and having some fun. >> reporter: no one falls off? >> i haven't seen it. you have to watch them and make sure an adult is on the back of the ladder and not drinking beer. >> reporter: what you do with all these beads? >> we sometimes give them away for the next parade. >> reporter: i love this. where did you get these? >> from walmart. ♪ [ music ]♪ >> it's the best place in the world and you have to come to

mardi gras. >> reporter: if you haven't experienced mardi gras, you have to come to new orleans and experience it. it is amazing. take a look at what's going on right now. the sun is starting to come up a little bit. it's getting a little light. but you can see the mississippi river, a little misty, a little interesting, maybe even a little eerie, frank. >> lawrence and i have a question for you. the over-under for how much sleep you're getting? we're thinking maybe two, three hours? you took three, i took two max. >> who's closest? >> i'm about at an hour and a half. sunshine coming our way. it looks like we'll have temperatures warming up in the mid-60s. heading out now high clouds cruising by, temperatures not as cold, still in the 30s and 40s. brisk at the coast, breezy, mid- 50s. low 60s in some of the interior valleys. so the ridge slowly building in now. it takes a day before it gets going. low pressure headed east and we are going to see some warmer temperatures over the next couple of days. seasonal temperatures, dry here and around the state. 50s and 60s into the central valley. high country 43 degrees in lake tahoe, 54 into monterey bay and 60 ukiah. around the bay temperatures 60 in san jose, 58 palo alto, 54 pacifica. east bay temperatures well into the 50s, maybe even low 60s by

the afternoon under mostly sunny skies. and inside the bay 60 oakland. 57 san francisco. next couple of days warm sunshine returns mid-60s through wednesday, thursday and friday. then cooling off more clouds over the weekend. liza? >> lawrence, it's still looking pretty good out there. we are going to take you all on a tour of bay area bridges and freeways where everything is fine so far. take a look at these pictures of 101 as bridge crews prepare for the morning commute. you can see that truck there, they are preparing to set up four southbound lanes for the commute into san francisco. you can see traffic still wide open moving along just fine. the bay bridge commute all overnight roadwork has been picked up and the car that broke down on the upper deck is cleared. westbound looks good between oakland and san francisco. no accidents for 101 and 280 as it rolls through the city. and all those headlights you're looking at now would be the westbound 580 drive approaching the very busy dublin interchange. expect backups now in pockets

westbound 580 leaving the livermore area approaching dublin. that's a look at the morning commute. here's frank. it's a new golden era for a bay area sports. sports fans we have a lot to celebrate here in san francisco. springboarding of course from the giants world series to the 9ers first super bowl appearance in 18 years. >> people do get a little spring in their steps. they do feel excited. they connect with others. they talk about it with their friends and even strangers. >> makes everybody feel good the normal life the last three four years the recession and everything, and i think it's coming around right now. >> the east and south bay, the warriors are playing well. as had a big year and sharks haven't lost a game since kicking off about a week and a half ago. how about some fan photos?

off? >> dance in a couple of mardi gras parades and bring video and show the viewers back here. >> reporter: sounds like fun. we have been meeting interesting people the last few days one our police chief here in new orleans police chief sir pass. we were interview him along the street in the french quarter. he is a celebrity. he says the police officers here in new orleans really try to make relationships here with the residents with the locals. that's how they keep the peace. they have mounted police, people petting the horses.

it's a great atmosphere day and night here in new orleans. what i thought was cool is people come to the parades just to collect the beads. people have garbage bags of beads. what do you do with them? >> sell them and rethrow them for mardi gras from a different float. >> reporter: what does it me when you see someone walking down the street with a neckful of beads? >> they are having a great time. >> whoo! >> reporter: a great time indeed. >> new orleans, frank. >> our crack staff just told us 527 calories in three beignets. so when we come back you can get to work. >> reporter: it's new orleans. i don't care. >> thanks, michelle.
